The Early Introduction to the Nursing Profession (EINP) started as a summer day program hosted by the Elisabeth DeLuca School of Nursing for high school students exploring a career in nursing.
Held annually in June, the program ran for three days at the Storrs campus with one day at a local hospital. Students were mentored by UConn faculty and nursing students, attended presentations from various on-campus departments, and participated in hands-on learning in the Simulation Lab. They also completed Health Literacy projects, received CPR training, toured campus, and even met Jonathan the Husky dog.
One of the days was held at a local hospital, where students toured the education and simulation center, explored the medical transport helicopter, and shadowed nurses and other healthcare professionals for a firsthand look at clinical practice.
Over the three years the program was offered, we hosted amazing groups of students who were engaged, curious, and excited about nursing—and who often formed lasting friendships along the way.
Looking Ahead to PCS
Beginning Summer 2026, the EINP program is excited to announce its inclusion in the UConn Pre-College Summer course offerings! This exciting collaboration reflects the continued growth and expansion of the EINP program and will allow us to engage, educate, and inspire even more students who are passionate about exploring a future in nursing.
As part of PCS, students will experience everything they love about EINP’s hands-on, nursing-focused curriculum—now enhanced through a fully immersive, one-week residential program. This expanded format provides the perfect blend of academic exploration and vibrant campus life. Participants will:
- Live on campus in UConn residence halls
- Dine in the dining halls and experience college routines
- Take part in a wide range of social and extracurricular activities
- Build lasting connections within a diverse and inclusive community
A program fee supports the full residential experience—including experienced faculty instruction, housing, meals, supervision and all activities. To help ensure this experience remains accessible, students may be eligible for scholarships or external funding to help support their participation.

Reviews for the EINP Program
Thank you very much for all of your efforts in coordinating the information about the EINP Nursing Program. Everything ran very smoothly and all the participants were very well prepared for this program.
My daughter loved every aspect of this program and couldn't wait to come home and tell me about her whole day. She was very excited about all the things she was able to learn in a short period of time. Thank you so much for allowing her this incredible opportunity. It is greatly appreciated. - Parent, Summer 2024
Thank you very much for providing such a valuable program to our students today! It was very beneficial for them to learn more about UConn Nursing School, and the EINP. I loved how hands on it was and all the different activities. It exposed us to different types of nursing and it was so much fun. Helped me narrow down my interests and was such a great experience!! - Student, Summer 2024
I liked the simulation labs and getting to get hands-on experience with Daphne, Harvey, and the babies. It was really helpful to act out what nurses do everyday. - Student, Summer 2024
I love being able to shadow nurses for the first time because I've always dreamed of being one. Second I loved meeting new people and making new friends who are interested in being in the same profession as me. - Student, Summer 2024
I liked the opportunities provided to us. I really liked how we were given the ability to see the sim labs as well as shadow nurses. I also think becoming CPR certified is a must so I am very grateful this program had that asset. - Student, Summer 2024
