Dr. Dickson is the 11th Dean and Professor of the UConn School of Nursing. Building upon her extensive clinical experience as a nurse practitioner, Dr. Dickson’s research program focuses on investigating the social determinants of health and bio-behavioral influences on self-care among individuals, families, and communities with/at risk for cardiovascular disease. Her research has led to an improved understanding of the sociocultural influences of self-care among vulnerable populations and the development of innovative theory-based interventions. Dr. Dickson is an international expert in mixed methods research and has conducted training for interdisciplinary teams internationally. She is dedicated to building research capacity across disciplines and advancing nursing science that impacts policy and clinical care.
Prior to joining UConn Nursing, Dr. Dickson was the John W. Rowe Professor of Successful Aging; Assistant Dean, Research Innovation; and Director of the Pless Center for Nursing Research at New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing. She served as PI of the NHLBI- funded R25 Research Education in Cardiovascular Conditions program, PI of the NIOSH-funded doctoral training program in occupational and environmental health nursing, co-PI of the NINR-funded P20 Exploratory Center for Precision Health in Diverse Populations, and KL2 co-director and co-investigator of the NCATS-funded NYU CTSI.
Dr. Dickson is the Chair of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) a signature initiative of the American Academy of Nursing that promotes better health through nursing science. She is the editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.
