Dr. Joy Elwell has 35 years’ experience in nursing. She is a clinical professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. A family nurse practitioner (FNP), Dr. Elwell also holds a dual appointment with UConn’s School of Medicine.

A nationally recognized expert in health policy, she helped design, draft, and pass successful legislation, advancing nurse practitioner practice at the state and federal levels. Committed to reducing health care disparities and barriers to NP practice, she has served on boards at both the state and national levels, representing advanced practice nursing interests.

In 2004, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Long Island University, in 2007 she received the Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award from The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State, and in 2016, received the Agnes Ohlson Diamond Jubilee Award from the Connecticut Nurses Association. In 2011, she was inducted as a Fellow of the AANP. She was inducted a Fellow of the AAN in 2016.
